Chapter Seven

The Eleventh Power

When the Doctor regenerates into a new body, a new persona, sometimes things go wrong. When the tenth Doctor transformed into the eleventh he had a sudden urge to eat fish fingers and custard, mixed together. Ugh! But sometimes the Doctor's regeneration process goes terribly, terribly wrong.

You only have to look at the regeneration of the fifth Doctor into the sixth to affirm that worrying fact. The sixth Doctor acted like a psycho and tried to strangle his companion Peri soon after his regeneration. By the end of the first episode he had settled down to his more rational self, but there's no denying that the whole incident was upsetting to many fans. They weren't prepared to see the Doctor as a sentient being who was truly alien…not at all human in his emotions, abilities, and personality. He wasn't the doddering eccentric or the action hero they'd considered him to be in earlier incarnations. The Doctor had become barking mad and wore an outrageously colored patchwork coat to boot.

The blame for the Doctor's horrendous tastes in fashion probably lies with the BBC, which was bent on canceling the show at that point, but still… Why allow a beloved character to behave so horribly unless you truly don't believe in his power for good?

Not remembering where the quarry I saw last night was located, or knowing if it was where Captain Mac or Babbling Brook had headed, I started the car and drove in the direction of my apartment. If John Smith didn't give me directions to locate his fellow aliens I could at least go home and catch up on my laundry before the world ended. Meanwhile my fez-wearing Doctor clone sat in the passenger seat, staring forlornly at the sonic lipstick in his hand.

"What's wrong?" I finally asked.

"They're gone," he replied softly. "Vanished. Into thin air. Disappeared."

"Captain Mac and Babbling Brook?"

"I was speaking of the chronos particles. It's as if there had never been any time disturbance at all…and we know that's not possible since we both recently time-traveled to Earth. Who or what could have simply swept all those particles away that I observed with your telescope just a short time ago? It would take enormous amounts of power to do something on that large of a scale."

A cold chill tingled down my spine. The pesky Bygons weren't capable of such grand feats of technology I had been informed on numerous occasions. They were definitely the henchmen for a much more diabolical and capable force. Somehow I got the feeling that John Smith had a suspicion of who or what this force was.

"Could the party or parties responsible for paying the Bygons to suck out Earth's atmosphere have done it? I mean, if you've got a big, atmosphere-sucking vacuum machine on standby, surely it could scoop up time particles as well?"

"Oh, Cici!" He laughed and dismissed my notion with a wave of his hand. "Oxygen is a physical element, not a temporal one like chronos particles, and vice versa.
